Applications/solutions | Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems

Key to any SUDS is source control – and the complete range of ADP products meets this requirement.

Over the course of the past century, the use of hard, impermeable materials in the construction of roads, driveways and parking areas has increased massively. The result is that rainfall, which once infiltrated naturally through the ground, is now typically drained away through pipes and culverts. This type of drainage can contribute to several problems. Firstly, because the rainwater is piped directly to streams and rivers, it can be a contributory cause of localised flooding. Secondly, because impermeable surfaces tend to be contaminated by oil, grease etc, the runoff can contribute to the pollution of streams and rivers.

Additionally, in some areas fresh rainwater is wasted. It is carried directly to streams and rivers – and from there to the sea – contributing to the lowering of levels in natural acquifers which are a primary source of water in some areas – particularly the south of England. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) provide an ideal alternative to traditional pipe and culvert drainage in a wide range of applications – particularly car parks, access routes and pathways. SUDS are designed to allow natural infiltration of rainwater and the treatment train usually incorporates a series of complementary techniques to achieve enhanced water quality.

Porous Surfacing

ADP TechTurf, ADpave 50, ADpave 25 and Turfguard all provide porous surfacing which allows water to infiltrate naturally. Source control is the preferred infiltration technique because, by controlling runoff at source, both outfall volumes and pollution are reduced.
